Bikeability

In year 6, children have the opportunity to take part in a ‘Bikeability’ programme. The programme is the Government approved National Standard for Cycle Training, which sets out the training and skills essential for making cycling trips on today’s roads. The programme is carried out by qualified instructors from Vandome Cycles.

The Bikeability programme consists of 8hrs of training. Two hours are playground based where the instructors can assess the child’s cycling skills. Six hours are set aside for road training on quiet roads but with real traffic conditions – this takes the form of a monthly ‘Bike club’ during the week at a time suitable for those particular children.

For your child to participate, he/she needs a completed consent form, a roadworthy bicycle and a helmet. Without this your child will not be able to participate.

A roadworthy bicycle consists of:

  • Fully functioning front and rear brakes
  • Tyres in good condition with good tread
  • Secure saddles in good condition
  • Unbroken pedals
  • Fixtures and fittings secure
